광활한 우주에 비하면 인간은 매우 작은 먼지(Very tiny dust)와 같다.  또한, 우주에서는 거리가 곧 시간을 의미한다. 1광년은 빛이 1년 동안 이동한 거리로, 멀리 있는 천체를 관측할 때 사실상 과거를 보고 있는 것이다. 별을 관찰할 때, 거리가 2배로 늘어나면 이미지의 크기는 1/4로 줄어든다. 거리가 멀수록 그 별의 이미지는 점(dot) 하나와 같은 낮은 해상도를 가질 수도 있다. 이를 통해 오래된 것은 멀리 있는 것과 같다고 가정할 때, 시간이 오래되면 멀리 있는 별의 사진처럼 저해상도의 이미지를 갖는다는 가설을 세울 수 있다.

그런데 디지털 세계에서는 픽셀의 크기가 물리적으로 고정되어 있지 않다. 또한, 디지털 이미지는 시간이 지나도 해상도가 변하지 않는다. 다만, 기술의 발전으로 인해 20년 전 내가 가지고 있던 100만 화소의 디지털 카메라와 현재 5000만 화소 카메라로 찍은 사진을 비교해보면, 앞의 가설처럼 낮은 해상도의 사진은 아날로그 사진이 시간이 지나며 색이 바래고 닳은 현상과 유사한 시각적 효과를 준다.

이러한 픽셀과 우주의 특징을 이용하여 기억, 사람, 미지의 것을 저해상도 이미지로 시각화하고자 했다. 희미해지는 기억에 대한 아쉬움, 잊혀진 사람에 대한 그리움, 그리고 너무 많은 미지의 것(Too many unknowns)에 대한 두려움처럼 불확실성에 대한 감정이 작업의 근원이라고 할 수 있다.

Compared to the vast universe, humans are like very tiny dust. In the universe, distance also signifies time. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, so when observing distant celestial bodies, we are essentially looking at the past. When observing stars, as the distance doubles, the size of the image reduces to 1/4. The further away a star is, the lower the resolution of its image might be, potentially appearing as a single dot. Assuming that something old is like something far away, we can hypothesize that as time passes, memories may have low-resolution images like photographs of distant stars.

However, in the digital world, pixel sizes are not physically fixed. Also, digital images do not change resolution over time. Nevertheless, comparing photos taken with my 1-megapixel digital camera from 20 years ago to those taken with a current 50-megapixel camera, the lower resolution photos give a visual effect similar to analog photos fading and wearing over time, just like the previous hypothesis.

Using these characteristics of pixels and the universe, I aimed to visualize memories, people, and the unknown as low-resolution images. The emotions towards uncertainty, such as regret for fading memories, longing for forgotten people, and fear of too many unknowns, can be said to be the source of this work.
